Mission Statement
Purpose and Vision
The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health aims to achieve
preeminence in continuing medical education (CME) through state, national and
international educational activities that are built on a platform of evidence
based medicine and adult learning principles. The School of Medicine and Public
Health sustains an exemplary program of continuing education that impacts the
provision of health care in Wisconsin and beyond by capitalizing on its world class
faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and strategic partnerships. As part of a
major academic center of learning, the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
and Public Health operates at the nexus of medicine and public health, and to that
end pursues both system wide health initiatives as well as focused interventions
related to the needs of specific populations and/or health professionals.
Content Areas
The content of the activities sponsored by the School of Medicine and Public Health
includes primary care, specialty, and subspecialty topics in the field of medicine.
The scope of activities involves the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized
and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline
of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to patients and populations.
Target Audience
In the tradition of the Wisconsin Idea and befitting the role of the University of
Wisconsin-Madison as a world class institution of higher learning, the target audience
of the School of Medicine and Public Health includes physicians and other health
professionals both locally and throughout the world. Categories of learners targeted
for education include:
- The faculty of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health
- Physicians and other health professionals throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest
- Physicians and other health professionals in the United States who participate in national activities offered in cooperation with strategic educational partners
- International health professionals that attend national conferences and/or access online learning resources

Expected Results of the Program
As a result of these educational activities, the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
and Public Health fosters the continuing professional development of health professionals.
The offerings are intended to enhance physician and other health care professionals'
training by increasing clinical competence and improving performance in practice in order to produce better patient health outcomes.
The Office of Continuing Professional Development in Medicine and Public Health is
committed to assessing the impact of the CME Program through multiple methods, including qualitative and quantitative approaches that will track learner changes in competence, performance and patient outcomes that result from the learning process. Assessment tools will be selected based upon the educational intervention,
individual learning objectives, and available resources. The results of CME activities
sponsored by the School of Medicine and Public Health are assessed as follows:
- For Regularly Scheduled Conferences, satisfaction, pre- and post-activity knowledge assessment, and self reported change in behavior
- For Live Activities, satisfaction, pre- and post-activity knowledge assessment, and self reported change in behavior
- For Physician Enhancement Initiatives, comprehensive assessments are based upon data obtained from neuropsychiatric testing, chart-stimulated recall, test-stimulated discussion, medical record review, objective-structured clinical examination, multiple choice tests, clinical judgment analysis, and 360° evaluation
- For Home Study and other Enduring Materials, satisfaction, post-activity knowledge assessment, and self reported change in behavior
- For Return-To-Practice Opportunities, comprehensive assessments are based upon data obtained from chart-stimulated recall, test-stimulated discussion, medical record review, objective-structured clinical examination, multiple choice tests, clinical judgment analysis, and 360° evaluation
- For Internet Activities, satisfaction, post-activity knowledge assessment, and self reported change in behavior
- For Performance Improvement Activities, satisfaction, medical record review, and aggregate practice data
